153.4 lbs, 14.5% body fat. First night of San Shou practice. Holy fucking hell, was that a workout. About an hour and a half into it, I was starting to feel pretty weak. I think a few more drills would have made me puke. I couldn't complete most of the upper body drills, which was frustrating. I did, however, manage to stay on the 2 min per quarter mile pace that Shifu asked for, but eventually the goal is 90 second quarters and a 10 second sprint instead of the 15 second one I pulled out tonight. That's not much slower than my high school 1600 PR, which I think was 5:11.
I'm going back on Thursday, but keeping in accordance with the second-day-after rule, I'll probably be more sore than I've been in a long time going into practice. I can already feel it...my shoulders and chest feel weak. If I eat enough, I'll definitely build some muscle. If I eat enough. That's a big if. Otherwise I'll just be kicking my own ass every practice for very little gain.
This is such hard work, though, that it will be on my mind quite a bit more. I have no intention of wasting this opportunity to get in peak physical condition and gain those 10 pounds I've been seeking for as many years.
I definitely should not have stayed up this late, but the movie (Dick) was entertaining, and I'm a little restless with memories of tonight's practice competing with my desire for sleep. R.J. gave a lot of encouragement...that helps a lot. I know it's always going to be hard, because the bar will constantly be raised. Shifu mentioned that he "[has] a feeling that this is the year."
